Hayden to Quit International Cricket Today,Courier Mail Says

Jan. 13 (Bloomberg) -- Matthew Hayden, Australia’s most- prolific opening batsman, will quit international cricket today, the Courier Mail reported.

Hayden, 37, had been considering his future after being omitted from Australia’s Twenty20 and one-day squads, the newspaper reported. Hayden will “make an announcement” this morning at the Gabba stadium in Brisbane, Cricket Australia said.

Hayden’s retirement comes after he failed to pass 50 in five home Test matches, averaging just 19.56 in the 2-1 series defeat to South Africa. He scored 8,624 runs in 103 Tests, including 30 centuries, at an average of 50.73. He also amassed 6,133 runs in 161 one-day internationals at 43.80.

Australian selectors are undecided about who will replace Hayden atop the batting order in the top-ranked Test team, the Courier Mail said. Australia’s next series is a three-match contest in South Africa starting Feb. 26 in Johannesburg.
