ASUS EN9800GT HybridPower Video

ASUS EN9800GT HybridPower Video Card Review

The recent flurry of launches of video cards has really redefined what the industry is like on the market especially with the holiday season just starting. ATI and NVIDIA have completed their holiday lineups of video cards with numerous cards available across the myriad price spectrum. The high-end of the video card market is dominated by the GeForce GTX 280 and ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 cards at over $400, but what about the mid-range?

NVIDIA's answer to the mid-range of the video card spectrum surfaced in the form of the GeForce 9800GT and GeForce 9800GTX. While the GeForce 9800GT is basically a rebranded GeForce 8800GT, with higher clock speeds the 9800GTX is an 8800GTX with HybridPower. The 9800GT retails in stores online for the reasonable price of $110 online with the 9800GTX+ being online for about $169. The price difference is large enough to call them two different price ranges. ASUS manufactures computer equipment like motherboards and video cards so naturally, they have a 9800GT card. Today's review is on the ASUS EN9800GT HybridPower video card.

Palit Revolution 700 Deluxe Radeon HD 4870 X2

Palit Revolution 700 Deluxe Radeon HD 4870 X2 Review

The video card market has been interesting in that the last couple months have seen NVIDIA and ATI trade jabs with each adjusting their pricing strategy to meet market demands. Competition is a good thing in the video card industry as we have seen stagnant releases by both NVIDIA and ATI over the last two or three years with neither side really increasing performance by the magnitude that the GeForce 7 to 8 transition saw or the Radeon 8500 to 9700 Pro transition saw.

ATI launched their HD 4870 to great praise in June of 2008, 6 short months ago. This was their first real win in the videocard arena since the ATI Radeon x1800 was introduced. The HD 4870 is one of the price/performance leaders in the video card industry for the Holiday season. ATI decided to take the efficient route, designing a new architecture on 964 million transistors on 55 nanometer process technology giving more performance per watt than their competitor, the GTX 260. This efficiency also translated into the ability to make a dual-GPU card with two of the chips without using too much power.

Enter the HD 4870 X2 dual-GPU video card into the arena. ATI combined two of their HD 4870 chips onto a single PCB, with 2GB of GDDR5 memory split into two 256-bit buses. This card has shown the performance to outdo the GeForce GTX 280 throughout the performance spectrum. The HD 4870 X2 is also capable of being used in a dual HD 4870 X2 configuration called Quad CrossfireX. Palit decided to release their reference clocked HD 4870 X2 at launch but today have also launched a custom designed PCB HD 4870 X2 called the Revolution 700 Deluxe Radeon HD 4870 X2 card which is on the review bench today

Gaming on the Revolution 700 Radeon HD 4870 X2

Call of Duty World at War is the latest game from Activision. The COD series is set in different theaters of war with the latest one set in WWII Japan. The 4870 X2 from Palit played this game flawlessly with framerates in the 70s even under heavy fire from the enemy. The graphics engine is based on DirectX 9.0 graphics capabilities and the HD 4870 X2 was fine up to the maximum resolution 1920x1200 4x AA 16x AF throughout.

Left 4 Dead is another of those recent games this time by Valve the makers of Half Life 2 Episode 1 and 2 and the various variants. The Source engine has been updated to add some features such as physics-based animation and multi-core processor support. Self-shadowing normal mapping and advanced shadow rendering was added to the engine to give a more realistic look to the game. The game played fantastically on the HD 4870 X2 card with high framerates throughout the game with maximum settings.

The HD 4870 X2 card is designed to play games like Far Cry 2 which has a new engine called the X-Ray engine instead of the CryEngine 2 that was used in Crysis. Set in an African country in the midst of a Civil War, Far Cry 2 improves upon the original by having wide open gameplay throughout the game. The game played beautifully on the HD 4870 X2 from Palit with frame rates in the 30s throughout the resolution spectrum and with AA and AF enabled. The card plays it wonderfully.

Thecus N3200 NAS

Thecus N3200 NAS Review

Dependable secure storage is important for everyone. In this day and age of identity theft and the economic recession that has caused many companies to lay off people, secure storage can mean the difference between someone stealing your information and using it or the loss of a business. Network attached storage systems are basically computers connected to a network to provide data storage, file systems and access to files separate from the main computer.

Thecus is a company that sells storage solutions to keep data safe and secure. Founded in 2004 they have several Core Values including Quality, Innovation, integration and reliability that they base their company upon. Their main business is the Network Attached Servers that I mentioned earlier in the review and they have many models for the enterprise, small business, the SOHO user, and home environments. I recently reviewed the Thecus N5200 5 bay storage server and today I'm reviewing the N3200 3-bay server

MSI R4670 2D512

MSI R4670 2D512 Review by Ben Sun

The holiday season is upon us and I hope everyone has a safe and sane holiday season as we will celebrate Christmas next week and the New Year's the week after that. This is the time of year for Christmas gifts and one of the best gifts that a person can give to a computer user is a new video card as it can improve the game playing experience on the computer immensely.

ATI announced the HD 4870 series of cards in June of 2008. The 4870 was a great card at launch as it offered great performance for a good price as compared to the competition, the GeForce GTX 260 which had launched at a much higher price and similar performance. This caused NVIDIA to lower their prices to compete. The vast majority of computer video card sales are not in the $300 price range that the HD 4870 was targeted at.

Most video card purchases are made in the under $200 price range and ATI decided to target this price range with the HD 4850 which was a lower clocked, DDR3 memory 4870 card. Even more sales are made on under $100 video cards and the ATI HD 4670 is poised right at that price point with a MSRP of just $79. Today, I'm reviewing the MSI R4670 2d512/D3 card. While a lot of headlines are generated justifiably so by the HD 4870, the X2 and the GTX 280, let's see what MSI can do with their 4670 card.

NZXT Tempest Case

NZXT Tempest Case Review

Cases are important parts of the computer as they not only display the internal components of the computer but also determine what can be installed in the computer in terms of drives and motherboard size. Most people don't care much about the case due to the fact that they are using a pre-built system from the likes of Dell or Gateway or other major OEM.

The hardcore enthusiast, on the other hand uses the case to show off the modifications they have done to their computer, show off the latest video card from ATI or NVIDIA and show off the wiring inside the case. Many case manufacturers design their cases to have good airflow and wire management with NZXT being near the forefront of case design for air management. Today's review is on the Tempest case from NZXT.

GMC K2 Ebony R2 Toast and R3 Corona

GMC K2 Ebony R2 Toast and R3 Corona Review

Cases are important parts of the computer as they can determine the total expansion possible on the computer, the look of the computer, and the number of drives on a computer and the type of cooling on the computer. While many people justifiably leave the case as the last resort, the high-end computer enthusiast will want something more. GMC is a South Korean company that specializes in case design. Today there are not one, not two but three cases on the review bench: the GMC R3 Corona, the GMC R2 TOAST and the GMC K2 Noblesse cases. The K2 Noblesse Ebony is designed for the Multimedia PC. The R2 Toast and R3 Corona are Mid-Tower ATX cases with interesting design features.

NVDIA Stereoscopic 3D Vision Gaming

Gaming has always been a passion of mine and I have played every type and variation of game out there, be it board, PC, console or D&D with my friends in high school. I have also dabbled a bit in the 3D gaming arena with the I73D monitor and it was very cool, but not quite ready for prime time. 3D, this is a term we have been hearing since the 1960's when cheesy paper glasses and mildly applicable 3D was introduced in movies and made things appear to be moving in your direction. In reality this entire concept is rather old, but technology is starting to catch up with the ideals of 3D and making it a viable application in the gaming world. The paper glasses have been replaced with some new cool plastic goggles and NVIDIA has incorporated the 3D aspect of gaming in these new goggles and their own drivers.

NVDIA Stereoscopic 3D Vision Gaming Review

NVIDIA always known as a trend setter and major player in the VGA game has taken stereo 3D to the next level and bringing it into your home by way of your NVIDIA VGA card a new pair of glasses and IR box that will be known as the GeForce Stereoscopic 3D Vision. One thing NVIDIA has proved is that even if your company, take PhysX for example is failing, NVIDIA has the money and resources to take that idea and turn it into a profitable idea. This whole thing is not a new idea in any way shape or form, but what NVIDIA has done is to make it happen in a new and better way by integrating the 3D spectrum into their VGA platform. One thing that really stopped me dead in my tracks for a day or so was how to convey what my eyes see into a written form that people would be able to grasp, I hope you can translate my words into something that grabs your attention. Let's move forward and see what this is all about as we look at the various aspects of NVIDIA's new 3D Vision.

The 3D effect is immediately noticeable when the hardware is engaged and shutting off the glasses is a rather sobering experience after being immersed in the 3D world of gaming. We only tried about ten of the titles that NVIDIA has on their list of titles supported, and a few that were not and the results were either out of this world or not really functioning right in the game. The two best games we played for the FPS were Left 4 Dead and COD WAW, and Grid. Mass Effect a game NVIDIA says played excellent did not function so. Age OF Empires 3 was the only RTS game that I thought played well.

Command and Conquer of any variety as well as the Warhammer 40,000 series looked blurry and unplayable with 3D now engaged. When the 3D vision works it works very well and in the games that we played when it did, I was very impressed beyond what I expected. The games do get a little darker in some cases when the 3D vision is turned on, but it's nothing critical to the gameplay experience. I would suggest playing in a room with very low fluorescent lighting 40w or less as the ambient room light does affect the way the screen is viewed and I enjoyed the game immersion more than in a highly lighted room. Overall I think this is a great thing that is really even more fun when combined with a big screen LCD TV, me and my friends had a blast racing on my new Samsung 46'' 120Hz Flat screen, and in truth it was pricey so much so that I had to sell a couple of my guitars to get the cash, but it was most assuredly great to be able to play these new 3D Vision enhanced games on a giant playing field.

ECS A790GXM-A Black

Elite Computer Systems is a motherboard manufacturer based in Taiwan that is known for their inexpensive though no-frills approach to design. They have tried to change that perception of their motherboards with the release of X48 motherboards with a ton of features but they are mostly relegated to those wanting the high-end chipset without paying the high-end prices of another company.

AMD has been trying to compete with Intel on their multi-core processors for the last few years now. One advantage they have is their integration of ATI allowing them to have a full system package: CPU, motherboard chipset and integrated graphics all in one package. Their current chipset the 790GX is the fastest available integrated graphics on the AMD market fully supporting DirectX 10. NVIDIA has launched the 9400 series on the Intel chipset but for the AMD chipset market this is it.

MSI X58 Eclipse SLI Motherboard

The recent release of the X58 chipset has seen a slew of motherboards announced from many manufacturers across the world. The X58 is the first of the LGA-1366 motherboard chipsets from Intel that are required for the new Core i7 CPUs and the ability to do triple channel DDR3 memory has increased the memory bandwidth for CPUs by a wide margin.

Micros Star International or MSI is a Taiwanese manufacturer of motherboards video cards and other computer equipment. They have been making motherboards for years. The board on the review bench today is the MSI X58 Eclipse motherboard which features support for both SLI and Crossfire unlike the Intel reference board which is not yet qualified for SLI. The other thing about this new board that I will take a close look at today is the features of the board. As with any major motherboard chipset release we launch a new hardware platform for it.

ASUS P6T Deluxe Motherboard

The recent launch of the Core i7 CPU series and the X58 chipset to support it has redefined performance on the Intel side of things in significant ways. With every launch of a new CPU and motherboard chipset there's a slew of releases from the major motherboard manufacturers to support the new chipsets. The biggest manufacturer of motherboards in the world is ASUS, a company based in Taiwan. ASUS motherboards are a favorite of many hardware enthusiasts including Doc and myself, with our main computers using ASUS motherboards for years.

So what do you get when you combine the best new motherboard chipset with the best motherboard manufacturer on the planet in the form of ASUS? ASUS has announced several new motherboards based upon the X58 chipset including the Rampage II Extreme and the motherboard on today's test bench, the ASUS P6T Deluxe. With this being the second X58 motherboard we have reviewed, it should be an interesting review. ASUS has included a slew of new features exclusive to their chipsets so let's get started and see what the new motherboard is all about.

ECS X58B-A Black Series Motherboard

Intel released the X58 chipset along with a new CPU interface, the LGA-1366 Socket just a month or two ago. Since then, the vast majority of systems from major OEMs like Dell, Gateway and other major computer manufacturers have been based on the new platform. Motherboard companies have rushed to release new motherboards on the new platform so that hardcore enthusiasts wanting the latest from Intel can take advantage of the new chipset with their new CPU.

Elite Computer Systems has been manufacturing motherboards for several years based upon all the available chipsets from manufacturers like Intel, NVIDIA, AMD and others including Via and SIS which are out of the chipset business in all but name. With the launch of the X58 chipset, Intel is the only manufacturer that can make motherboards at the moment due to the lack of a Quick Path Interface license by anyone but Intel. ECS has delivered a new motherboard into the test labs today, the ECS X58B-A Black Series and that is the board on the test bench.

Intel X58 Extreme DX58SO Motherboard

Intel’s recent launch of the X58 chipset has led to many reviews praising the new chipset and CPU as being the fastest available to the consumer right now. Intel has the entire high end covered with the under $300 Core i7 920, the $500+ Core i7 940 and the $999 Core i7 965 XE. Intel sells their chipsets at a retail price of nearly the same as the CPUs meaning that a new system based upon the new CPU will cost over $1000 when you add in the cost of memory and hard drives and other components.

AMD has a hard time competing as their CPUs are not competitive with the latest offerings from Intel. I’ve reviewed motherboards from ASUS, ECS, and MSI based upon this chipset but what about the reference board from Intel? Intel generally makes good stable reference boards leaving the tweaking to the other board manufacturers based upon their reference design. Intel has tried to shake the feeling by releasing tweaked boards like the X48 Bonetrail 2 reference design. Last month they released the X58 chipset with the codename Smackover. The reference board is called the DX58SO and is on the review bench today

Gigabyte EX58-Extreme Motherboard

With the recession fully in play, businesses have had to tone down their optimistic forecasts for revenue and profit for the next year or more. The problem with a recession where companies are failing, businesses are laying off more people than any time in history and banks are failing, the sales possibilities of a highly-priced new product are less than if there was no recession.

Intel's X58 chipset has been at the forefront of motherboards in the past month or so due to the release of Intel's new Core i7 CPU which introduces a new CPU interface, a new motherboard chipset and triple-channel memory interface which brings new memory bandwidth into the equation for the newest and greatest from Intel. The Core i7 launch has re-energized a market that has been stuck in LGA-775 hell for the last four years.

Gigabyte has built motherboards, video cards and other computer accessories for several years now including the EP45 Extreme and many others based upon every motherboard chipset on the market today. They have announced several motherboards based upon the X58 chipset, as time goes on new boards will likely be released with more features and performance. Today I'm reviewing the Gigabyte EX58-Extreme motherboard, Gigabyte's flagship motherboard for the X58 chipset.

XFX nForce 750i SLI Motherboard

While the main thrust of 2009 from Intel will undoubtedly be the X58 chipset and other boards that use the LGA-1366 CPU interface, the fact of the matter is that upgrading to the X58 chipset requires some doing. The $250 price tag for a X58 based motherboard, combined with the higher price point for the DDR3 memory makes the hardware upgrade to the X58 chipset and a Core i7 CPU rather high. For the mid-range user that has DDR2 memory, and a decent Core 2 Duo or even Quad CPU, the time may be right to upgrade to a newer Intel board.

XFX mainly builds motherboards, video cards and other computer equipment based upon NVIDIA based motherboard chipsets. In recent months, they have announced the use of ATI graphics chips in upcoming video cards and have used the X58 chipset in their motherboard lineup. Choice is good, as staying with one chip manufacturer in this uncertain economic time is rather limiting and can cause problems with supply or even entire product lines if the company in question goes under. Circuit City, once a leader in consumer electronics is no more. Many banks have been bought out. Automakers have a massive bailout. In any event, today's review is on the nForce 750i SLI motherboard from XFX based upon NVIDIA's nForce 750i chipset and XFX is still alive and well and moving forward with new energy...
